You recently got married and life is great! You and your spouse are happily adjusting to life as a married couple, when one day you retrieve your mail and realize that your mail is still addressed to you with your maiden name.
You know you need to change your name everywhere…but how do you do this and who do you need to notify?
LinkMy.Wedding knows that you need to notify practically everyone, and this can be both time consuming and troublesome if not done properly.
Here are five documents that you need to obtain and update with your name change that LinkMy.Wedding has compiled to help get you started on your name-change journey:
- Certified Marriage Certificate – This is different than your marriage license, and you will need to show proof of marriage to change your name. You should receive this a few weeks after your wedding from the county in which you were married. If you need additional copies of your marriage license, reach out to your states vital records office.
- Social Security Card – This should be your first step, because all government agencies refer to the SSA database when checking your name and information. You need to update this first for the other government agencies to update your name. If this isn’t done first, no name changes will be allowed on other government documents.
- Driver’s License – Rules vary by state, but most require your updated social security card, current driver’s license, and your legal name change form.
- Passport – You need proper documentation for international travel, and being stuck at the airport isn’t the place to find out that your passport wasn’t updated properly. Different forms are required depending on how long you have had your current passport. Getting a new passport is a slow process which can take up to eleven weeks…so plan accordingly.
- Other Accounts – Credit cards, bank accounts, IRS records, insurance, utilities, voter registration, post office, Facebook…. everyone needs to be notified.
These are all important documents/accounts that need to be changed ASAP after your wedding day.
LinkMy.Wedding knows that staying organized and making sure nothing is missed is important in all aspects of not only weddings, but when planning any special event.
This is exactly why we developed LinkMy.Wedding.
