While planning your wedding, you may read about a lot of these seemingly odd and outdated traditions and wonder where they came from. Most of these began thousands of years ago, when people were more worried about evil spirits, fertility, and keeping the groom from running away (seriously).

LinkMy.Wedding has put together a brief explanation of some of these traditions to help better explain the reason behind them.

Before the Wedding 💒

• Engagement Rings: Originally symbolized that the man now owned the woman and the ring was seen as a business contract…aah true love. ❤️
  
• Not Seeing Each Other Before the Ceremony: This tradition came about when parents were still arranging marriages…they didn’t want the bride or groom to run away before the marriage if they didn’t like what the other person looked like.

The Ceremony 👩‍❤️‍👨

• The Bride Stands on the Left: This would allow the groom to keep his sword hand free, in case he had to fight off other men who wanted his bride, or to fight family members who disapproved of the marriage.
  
• Bridesmaids: They were used as decoys to confuse potential kidnappers and unholy spirits…being a bridesmaid came with risks!
  
• Wedding Bouquets: People used to only bathe a couple times a year…so flowers 💐(and sometimes garlic 🧄) were carried to cover up any body odor and to ward off evil spirits.

The Wedding Cake 🎂

• Where Did Rubbing Cake in the Face Originate?  Ancient Romans would crumble cake over the brides’ head to symbolize fertility and male dominance…what a great way to start your life together.
  
• Why are Wedding Cakes Three-Tiered? The first tier is for eating at the reception, the second tier is for distributing when the reception is over, and the third tier is used for celebrating, typically on your first-year wedding anniversary (yum…year old, freezer burnt cake) or the christening of the couples’ first child.
