(without crushing souls or morale)
Foxie knows that giving constructive criticism isn’t always easy. We’ve all given it, received it, and occasionally walked away thinking well…that could have gone better.
Constructive criticism is one of the most powerful tools in business and life, allowing us to grow, improve, and sharpen our strengths. Delivered right, it boosts confidence, clarity and performance…done wrong it backfires faster than if you reheated fish in the break room microwave.
With over 45 years of experience starting and managing small businesses, here is what Foxie has learned while delivering constructive criticism.
The Do’s: What makes feedback constructive
- Be specific – Focus on the behavior, not the person. Saying “The presentation felt rushed,” is far more helpful than, “You always seem disorganized.”
- Lead with respect – The purpose of feedback is improvement, not embarrassment…tone matters just as much as content.
- Offer solutions – Constructive feedback pairs criticism with ideas for improvement or next steps.
- Listen as much as you speak – Feedback is a two-way conversation…not a lecture.
Here are somethings NOT to do while delivering constructive criticism.
The Don’ts: Avoid these common mistakes
- Don’t generalize – Words like always or never are rarely accurate and often accusatory.
- Don’t deliver feedback publicly – Nobody likes to be embarrassed… deliver criticism behind closed doors.
- Don’t sugarcoat to the point of confusion – Kindness is key, but clarity is essential to get your point across.
- Don’t critique without direction – Without clear guidance as to what the next steps should be, feedback becomes criticism…and nobody thrives on that.
Foxie knows that constructive criticism isn’t about pointing out flaws…it’s about opening doors to improvement. When we approach feedback with clarity, empathy, and actionable insight, we empower people to perform at their best. The goal is growth, progress, and understanding, and that all begins with how we deliver our message.
Give feedback like you’d like to receive it: with honesty, kindness, and the belief that better is always possible!
When you are ready to improve your communication, Foxie is here for you.
