Foxie knows that in small businesses, people work closely…sometimes very closely. With different personalities, communication styles, and approaches to getting work done, conflict is inevitable. That doesn’t always mean something is wrong…it means humans are collaborating. The goal isn’t to eliminate conflict, but to manage it professionally so it doesn’t disrupt productivity, morale, or trust.

Below are four common workplace conflicts that Foxie has found in almost all small business environments…and how to resolve them effectively.

  1. Communication Style Clashes

Some employees love being direct and concise, while others prefer context and discussion. Some will blindly do as told by leadership, while others will want to know why they are doing what they are being told to do.

ResolutionEncourage clarity and active listening. Ask team members to confirm understanding before reacting.

  • Different Work Styles

One person loves structure and checklists; another thrives with flexibility. Tensions arise when expectations aren’t aligned.

Resolution: Set clear goals and deadlines while allowing individuals flexibility in how they work. Bottom line is making sure that the job is getting done.

  • Personality Conflicts

Not everyone will get along…and that’s ok. Personal differences and beliefs don’t have to become professional problems.

ResolutionSet boundaries and outline what is and what is not appropriate work conversation. Refocus conversations on shared objectives rather than personal preferences and opinions.

  • Feedback Issues

Feedback can feel like a personal attack when it’s vague or delivered poorly or in the wrong environment.

Resolution: Keep feedback private, specific, and solution-oriented, focusing on actions and not making it personal. “Praise in public, criticize in private.”

Conflict in a small business is unavoidable…but dysfunction doesn’t have to be. When handled with communication, empathy, and clear expectations, conflict can strengthen teams and improve collaboration. You don’t need everyone to agree…you just need everyone to work together effectively.

Being organized, documenting issues, and setting clear goals…Foxie will help make that all happen.
