5 Tips to Staying Productive Over the Holidays

The holidays can be a very fun and very distracting time of year. Most people will need to take some time off to travel, shop, cook, attend school plays, etc. What is weird about all this is your boss still expects you to work in December!

To help you navigate the holidays, Foxie we have come up with five surefire ways to help you be as productive as possible at work, while also giving you more time to enjoy the holidays…because life isn’t all about work.

  1. While you are working, focus on work – Schedule blocks of time to get specific tasks done, prioritize your list, estimate how much time each task will take and plan accordingly. Don’t be that guy who starts six different tasks and doesn’t finish any of them.
  2. Take some time off – We work hard all year long and deserve to spend some holiday time with family and loved ones. Take a day off during the middle of the work week to run some last-minute errands and maybe get a couple of hours of alone time. Get a haircut or a manicure and take some time to do something for yourself. You will come back rejuvenated and ready to take on the rest of the work week!
  3. Tell your family to respect your work hours – Working from home during the holidays can require great determination and focus. Kids are home from school and family and friends are always stopping by the house with great intentions. Everyone is not on the same schedule and it can be frustrating. Set firm boundaries as to when you are available and enforce them. Someone must pay for all the holiday festivities, so head down and focus on the job at hand.
  4. Take short breaks throughout the day – You hear the kids laughing, your brain is thinking about wrapping little Johnnie’s presents before he finds them…and you aren’t focusing on your job. Take that 10-minute break and have a Christmas cookie with the kids or to get that present wrapped. You will feel like you aren’t missing out on as much, and that in turn, will enable your brain to focus on work.
  5. Start your workday earlier – If you are working in a flexible position that doesn’t require you to be available between certain set hours, then start your day as early as possible. This will allow you to work a full day, enabling you to leave earlier to accomplish those last-minute holiday tasks.
