Cold Calling: Don't Be Afraid

You are a sales rep. It’s your job to sell, it’s “what you do.” When you run out of warm leads, it’s time to do what few like doing…and even fewer are successful at… cold-calling.

Cold-calling is defined as “a form of sales solicitation from businesses to customers who have never interacted with the salesperson making the call.”

Cold-calling doesn’t have to be scary or intimidating. You are going to hear a large percentage of “NOs” and you will be told to “lose their number” … if they don’t hang up on you first. It all comes with the territory. It’s not personal, it happens to top sales reps everywhere, every single day.

Foxie has come up with five sure-fire pieces of cold calling advice to make your calls more effective that we'd like to share with you.

Believe in what you are selling

  • The confidence you have in your product is conveyed through your voice. When you are passionate, potential customers will listen.
  • Draw parallels with things you are enthusiastic about in your personal life to help convey genuine belief in what you are selling.

Timing is everything

  • Avoid calling on Mondays and Fridays. People are recovering from or planning their weekend.
  • Customers are more receptive Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Dial then to increase your chances of receiving a positive response.

Your tone of voice matters

  • You can have the greatest product and best sales pitch, but if you sound unenthused and monotone, you won’t be selling anything.
  • You want to sound confident, but not pushy. There is no room for aggression while cold calling.

Focus on value

  • Emphasize how your product or service will benefit the customer personally or help them to achieve their goals.
  • Avoid technical jargon and speak to them like you would be speaking to a grandparent…slowly and respectfully. You don’t want to make them feel dumb or uninformed.

A script will be your best friend

  • A script? I don’t need or want a script. I’ve been selling for years.”
  • That’s a rookie mistake. A well-written script, delivered confidently and conversationally, greatly enhances your chances of making a sale.
