How to alleviate the "Sunday Night Blues."

It’s Sunday afternoon and you are sitting on the couch or in your favorite recliner when it suddenly hits you... Monday morning is rapidly approaching. You realize you will be going to bed in a few hours, and another weekend has come and gone. You start to feel anxious, and your mind suddenly switches from, “I sure am glad it’s the weekend,” to planning out how your Monday at work is going to play out. Welcome to the “Sunday Night Blues.”

Have you ever wondered what the root cause of your Sunda night anxiety is? Many people call them “The Sunday Night Blues,” or  “The Sunday Scaries?” No matter how you refer to it, let’s look at a few simple ways to help alleviate that feeling of dread on Sunday nights.

Get ready for Monday on Friday

  • Make a list of priorities for Monday, so you know what you need to do for the first few hours in the morning.
  • Check your calendar for the upcoming week and formulate a plan of attack. This will help to alleviate your thoughts of work over the weekend.

Errands on Saturday, relax on Sunday

  • Get all your errands and running around done on Saturday, to help minimize the negativity associated with Sunday.
  • Plan your Sunday with activities you like to do with family or friends or enjoy a little alone time. Having something planned that you enjoy doing will make you look forward to Sundays!

Early to bed early to rise

  • Avoid the temptation to try and make your Sunday last as long as possible by staying up late.
  • Go to bed a little earlier and set your alarm a few minutes earlier than usual. This will help ensure that you are well-rested on Monday morning and don’t feel rushed which will add more stress to your day.

Celebrate Monday nights or consider a change

  • Celebrate Monday evening by eating a favorite dinner or dessert. Make plans to catch up on some recorded shows. Having something to look forward to on Mondays will make them much easier.
  • If the “Sunday Night Blues” are directly associated with your job, do some soul-searching to see if a change is necessary. Making a job change is always worrisome but will be worth it for your mental and physical health if it would helps to alleviate much of the stress from your life.

You work hard all week. It’s time to take back your weekends!
