Top Five Ways to Build Trust at Work
You want your workplace to be a place where people feel comfortable with each other and don’t have to be constantly questioning what they are told. Trust is earned, not given. Once that bond is broken, it is very hard to get it back.
Foxie has come up with a few suggestions as to how to build trust at work...which in turn will improve morale and build better relationships between employees and management.
By building trust in a team of employees, it does much more than promote a happy and healthy work environment. Studies have proven that the more employees trust each other, the more productive they are, which is the end goal of every company.
- Trust starts at the top – Keeping your employees informed of what is going on within the company, talking about new products, sharing news about your competition…all these things are important. What is often overlooked though, is listening. The expression,” We have two ears and one mouth for a reason,” is very appropriate in the workplace.
- Set the example for everyone – Leaders often fail to realize that they shouldn’t hold themselves to the same expectations they expect from their employees…they should be held to a higher level. Great leaders bring enthusiasm and excitement to the workplace every day.
- Make expectations realistic – Employees need to be aware of what is expected of them and what they can expect from the company. Employers need to set realistic goals, and the bar should be set high regarding the quality of work and dealing with customers and ensuring their satisfaction.
- Team building is important – With so many team members now working remotely, team building isn’t as simple as it used to be. Buying pizza for everyone on Friday or maybe spending an hour at happy hour with the team used to be the norm. Now, successful leaders must use technology to keep everyone informed and cohesive. Hold a weekly or bi-weekly virtual team meeting. Have everyone speak for a minute or two about non-work-related topics. Ask for anything exciting they may want to share such as family announcements, personal achievements, how their long weekend was, what their plans are for the holidays, etc. Getting to know each other on a personal level will help develop that ever-important trust and assist in team building.
- Celebrate success together – Achievements should be celebrated! Did your team just reach a milestone or complete a big project? Talk about it during a companywide meeting and make sure to congratulate all the team members. Did an individual go above and beyond what is normally expected, and good things happened because they did? Recognize them in an email and CC their department head on it as well.
By celebrating hard work and “outside the box” thinking, you will help your employees to build trust in the company and in each other.
