You run a small business. How do you market it?

When you own or are running a small business, undoubtedly one of your major challenges is determining how to make your business stand out from your competition.

When a potential client asks you what separates you from your competition, what do you say? Sure, you can fall back on price, but that doesn’t tell your potential customer anything. Of course, price is important, but people don’t necessarily gravitate to what is the cheapest, certain stigmas come with that title. So, I will ask you again, why should I choose you over your competition?

Stand apart from your competition by understanding what it is that you do best, then really focus on promoting that. By demonstrating that you offer something that adds value over your competition, you will gain that potential client’s interest and trust.

If you do any of the following, PROMOTE them:

  • Serve a niche market better than anyone else?
  • Have an easier way of doing something?
  • Offer unique solutions to challenges?
  • Describe why your long-term clients stay with you
  • Do you offer customization to products that others normally don't?
  • Do you offer training and excellent customer service to help your clients get the most from your products?

Five ways to make your business stand out

Find your target market – By figuring out and focusing on what your niche is, you will then be able to concentrate on what you need to do or adjust to make and build strong customer relationships.

Be easy to work with –From your very first contact with a potential client to years later after you’ve been working together, you must make your customers feel like they’re the most important ones that you have. Provide them with a way to reach you whenever necessary via phone, text, or email.

Be the solution to a problem – Talk with your customer and ask what issues they are facing, or what could they use to make their job easier and more profitable. By making your solutions turnkey, you will be able to better assist your customers in a timely manner.

Evolve – Every business evolves and yours shouldn’t be any different. When a customer laments that they wish they had something, do your best to provide it. There are a lot of businesses like yours out there, so make sure you are providing and delivering your product better than anyone else. Give your customers “an offer they can’t refuse.” If you offer a “white glove service,” promote that! If your company provides training, and 24/7 help, or can offer free delivery or a free trial of your product, offer it. The slightest little thing you do differently may give you the edge to garnering and keeping that customer's business.

Explain how your business reflects your values – Tell your potential clients why and how you came into the line of business you are in. Let them hear your passion and your belief that your product is second to none. You don’t need to start from day one, but tell your clients why you are in business, why you love what you do and how you can help them. When they see your passion, this will help convince them to believe in you and your company.
